The Osmium King fell into madness when he was 10 years old where he feared an event called the Syzygy whereby the planet's 52 moons aligned to create a massive tidal wave known as the God-Wave that destroyed the civilizations of Fundament. The progenitors of their kind were traced long ago to the three daughters of the Osmium King that resided in the continent of the Osmium Court. In addition, there were numerous predators that stalked their people such as the Stormjoys that were living clouds that preyed on them and the Hive themselves also frequently fought against one another. Fundament was nearly uninhabitable for their people with the Fundament Ocean being toxic to them whilst the skies were ever stormy and it rain was either poisonous or corrosive whilst lightning killed anything it struck.

Their existence by this point was noted to be harsh and the lifespan of their kind was quick with it rarely passing ten years on their world. The Hive were not alone on Fundament as it was population by hundreds of other intelligent species and the gas giant's 52 moons were similarly inhabited by a space faring race known as the Ammonites that were guided by the Traveler. These massive shards floated above the Fundament Ocean in a layer of the planetary atmosphere and the early Hive managed to craft a civilization whilst forgetting their earlier history. The shattered remains of their world thus served as large continents that floated above the gas giant's surface. Long ago, the earliest form of the Hive had managed to crash their home planet into Fundament in an effort to hide from an unknown threat. They were able to trace their origins to a gas giant that they named Fundament. There will be 6 game modes, which each focus on a specific task and require different strategies to complete effectively. The Hive were said to be an ancient and festering race of evil beings. Bosses can be very difficult in Hive Defender, and require careful coordinated attacks by multiple swarms at once! Do you want to carve out support lanes, construct massive kill rooms, or set up flanking positions to deal with the baddies? TECH can only be earned only by killing enemy combatants, and is rare to come by, so don't go switching up your subclasses too often or you'll be stuck with an invading force you can't defeat. But be careful! Which walls to demolish is an important choice. ORE is earned by destroying the walls of your own hive. This all suggests a two resource economy, typical of RTS games. Alternatively, you may wish to stay in the same subclass and fight at a disadvantage so that your mutations can level up mid-game, increasing the potency of your unique abilities! Based on which enemies are on the way, you will need to adjust the composition of the hive by mutating swarms between different subclasses, which costs TECH. On the in-game UI, you can see the next 3 minutes of enemy invaders - when they arrive, and their type. So for instance if a horde of weak enemies attack, you might mutate towards an AoE subclass, but if a boss arrives, you might need to switch to a single-target build. Each subclass serves a specific function and focuses on a particular “thing” that that subclass can do especially well. However, there are also 3 subclasses for each class, which give you access to 2 unique abilities which cost ORE to activate. The classes are designed to be mutually dependent, so for instance : warrior classes need helpers classes to survive, and builder classes need digger classes to gather the resources to build their buildings! Your class determines your base damage, and max health. Each swarm's class is set at the beginning of the match, and is fixed for the entirety of the game. Your aliens come in 4 classes : warrior, helper, builder, and digger. You play 2-4 as alien swarms simultaneously, depending on the gameplay mode and how many people are playing. In terms of storyline, imagine the reverse of Ender's Game - where you play as the alien hive mind, and the humans are the invading enemies. In terms of game-feel, imagine Deep Rock Galactic meets Star Craft. Hive Defender is an online, co-op focused RTS which aims to hit that "easy to pick up, impossible to master" sweet spot, where the game is enjoyable at all skill levels, and has accessible, rewarding depth of gameplay.
